There are 3 slots open for admin this election. For a full timeline check the original notice. Please keep all general discussion of admin candidates and the election process to this #s8-admin-election chat. Stay on topic within this channel and these threads. This means no GIFs/memes. This rules post is your warning. Each individual thread is for direct question and answer with candidates. After a question is asked, candidates can use reply with their answer. You can ask as much as you'd like, but understand it may take time for candidates to respond, and if you want to discuss answers or someone else's question, do so in the main discussion chat. I have answered this in a few different ways within my thread. Tldr; better organization and communication within the admin team, strong foundations and structure, work on smoothing out the "cracks" to ensure things down crack further down the chain, feedback loop and focus on the community. I think there was more but I feel like I have repeated myself a lot on it so I would recommend people read my thread to see more in-depth responses on this

β€’ We need to communicate clearly and thoroughly to the players. Players are number 1. We're here for them and we want to involve them. β€’ We need to always be recruiting (Lots of people have many talents that can help our staff) β€’ The core structure of how elevated staff communicates with one another needs to be smoother. Too many hands in the cookie jar can cause problems, but knowing when you need to ask for help is huge.

I've read a bit about committee autonomy throughout each discussion. How much power would/does an admin hold over any of them? I know I use it as an example a lot, but I can't think of another at the moment, apologies. If admins decide on something such as public MMR, is it then up to numbers committee to pull it off? Even if numbers committee is against it? Wouldn't that go somewhat against the complete autonomy they have/is being discussed? (edited)
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:29 AM
The admins do not much power over committees they can suggest and push them towards something but it is up to the committee head where the committee goes. Public numbers has always been an admin decision because it affects more than just numbers committee. But it will be up to numbers committee on how to do it and what they think is best not the admins

this is a discussion me and fuffy have had multiple times this season. With Numbers fully taking all of adjustment and MMR stuff off the hands of Admins, there is much less conflict with the two roles. Still definitely an ongoing discussion however and seeing as one of the applicants is a current GM, it will probably continue to be a discussion topic going into this offseason

So what I was think was only for GMs but I think we could introduce a vote of no confidence voted on by the league if the head is truly not acting in the leagues best interests

realistically no. Admins could propose it, but its ultimately solely media who determines that
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:37 AM
Admins can say he we think you should stream more but media can say no because of these reasons
Avatar
What if the admins vote and decide that they can?
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:38 AM
The admins can’t do that there isn’t a process set up for them to do that
Avatar
In the sense of taking away committee autonomy, I mean
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:39 AM
Again there isn’t a process for them to make that vote or decision
1:39 AM
That was one of the reasons I have committees full autonomy in the beginning
1:40 AM
To be free to move their part of the league in the direction they see fit
Avatar
Okay, fair enough. I'm just curious as I don't fully understand the workings of the committees or the relationships with admins, but I did read about committee autonomy and how a new admin could affect it

Just so I can go get the context to try and better explain it
1:41 AM

Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:45 AM
Oh I see, I think there is a difference between changing a logo or key β€œbranding” element and the admins deciding they want more games streamed. I think if a change is wanted in logo or anything similar that would be a league wide decision not a media decision, the media team would come up with ideas and have full autonomy once the league agrees to change something that large again this is my opinion and how I ran it in the beginning, but a change that large shouldn’t be made by a group of 5 people in a locked channel
1:47 AM
Like the media team has had full autonomy to create all the stream elements to the best of my knowledge, they have full autonomy on what games to stream ( with championships being heavily pushed for by admins and league)
1:47 AM
Tnoodle can better talk to it but that’s my take on it
Avatar
UPS | TNoodle πŸ†πŸ…πŸ… 4/20/2022 1:48 AM
For the record my reply to Nolan had to do with team logos, not the league logo. The branding of the league as a whole should be a blend of admin/media
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:48 AM
Oh then we are in 100% agreement
1:49 AM
But also team logos are the GMs to make that’s their autonomy when creating the franchise
Avatar
UPS | TNoodle πŸ†πŸ…πŸ… 4/20/2022 1:49 AM
Absolutely. Full league rebrand and if numbers should be public are more the β€œextreme outliers” where admins would need to be involved

I think media could help make it if asked but I would hate to take that away from the GMs

Could the admins decide that every tier final be streamed? Would they propose that to rules in which case it would be made a rule so media would have to do it? I'm just trying to ascertain how much power the admins do have for things like that. Sorry... (edited)
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:51 AM
They don’t have that power it’s up to the media committee full stop
1:51 AM
Not something that would pass through the rules committee
Avatar
I'm just using that as an example though. At what point does admin power end and committee power begin?
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 1:51 AM
As media head would be first to speak up and say this is bullshit
1:52 AM
With anything to do with the committee and it’s day to day workings. Admins can suggest but it’s up to CH to make decision again not counting outlier things like public numbers as stated before
Avatar
I mean in this hypothetical situation that willy is proposing I think the answer is collaboration. Admins make the schedule. Media organizes the stream. Media should be heavily involved in the schedule making in order to allow for a realistic ability to stream...if something happens and max gets deported to canada then well...atleast we tried.
1:54 AM
Making a rule seems just a power flex for no reason.

admins can request things of the committees, ie a specific thing from tech that we need for X sheet, but admins cant directly go tell committees what to do and how to do it

this 10000 percent, the admin team is only their to help when asked and suggest things to committee heads in the end like spence said admins are more overseers rather than anything else when it comes to committees

From my perspective, the committees run 90% of the server from making teams, rules, games running, streams, etc. and much of the work is delegated to said committees. What do the admins do outside of overseeing?
Avatar
OS | Spence πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:11 AM
there have been instances in the past when Admins had to be involved in committees because of the size of the league, but weve outgrown that for the most part. Obviously raptor with servers, fuffy still casting, ive helped run an event or two when others couldnt because if time, but for the most part were working away from that. One other thing me and fuffy have talked about was the way the draft lotto was handled. That was 100% a mistake on admins part, pushing for it to be done a certain way instead of allowing media to take control (something we recognized and have learned from)

make sure the natural flow of everything is kept in balance. The goal is to not be needed much at all, outside of meetings with CH and GMs to see how things are going and get any progress updates/answer any questions

If they are committee based it’s really up to the Ch and admin working in tandem where as if it’s not the admins should be able to accomplish what they need to aswell
Avatar
OS | Spence πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:18 AM
admins should still be driving committees in a direction that benefits the league. Some committees function more independently (media, events, numbers) just based on what their main functions are. Others work more closely with Admins (like Tech) where we will meet with the CH and say "we want to implement this with the league. would we be able to get a new command, new bot feature, etc. to help with that" and the CH will work with whoever in their committee has the knowledge to bring that idea to life

Guiding hand is often a termed used when talking about this
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:23 AM
Transactions and admins work hand in hand with certain rulings on whether a transaction should be allowed or not. Every season GMs find new ways to interpret rules or just forget about certain rules, making sure the TMs are enforcing the rules as they should be is an example of how admins work with committees. Every season certain rules are enforced harder than others (think pass interference or roughing the passer in football) the refs are more focused on enforcement of a rule depending on the season because that’s what they were asked/decided what to focus on that season. As I type this I saw guiding hand and I think that’s a good way to put it, the admins depending on where they want to push the league will then push certain committees to do certain things and this can change based off who is on the admin team

What would make a transaction not be allowed by an admin?
Avatar
Splatmonkey πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:26 AM
Plenty of things I would suggest reading all of section 5 of the rule book. There are many rules when it comes to transactions and making sure that the TMs follow the rules can sometimes be a job in and of itself. Not that they are breaking rules but may forget some aspect of a rule and allow a trade or cut when they weren’t supposed to

OS | Spence πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:31 AM
TMs have done a good job for the most part of catching mistakes, although there have been a few instances where they have asked to talk with us about a GM interpreting a rule in a new way and how to go about the response

OS | Cash πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:31 AM
I’ll respond now with something. Think if a transaction isn’t allowed because of a rule. That transaction would be cancelled and not allowed. For example β€œthis trade cannot be allowed because rule β€” states your only allowed one cross tier trade”
2:31 AM
So transactions would be cancelled it they break the rules
Avatar
Is the rule then concrete or subject to interpretation? I'm getting the feeling this is specific, but is it then up to the admin to allow or disallow the transaction?
Avatar
OS | Spence πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:35 AM
nothing in transactions is up to admins to specifically allow or decline a trade. If a trade is canceled for any reason, TMs will agree upon it and come to admins as a confirmation moreso than anything
2:35 AM
Transaction rules are not up for interpretation, however there have been a few instances where the rule is not as clear as it could be and a GM reads it as "well it doesnt say i CANT do this"
2:36 AM
that is the only instance where we might be called in to help deliberate, but even then, its an agreed conclusion between admins and the committee
Avatar
OS | Cash πŸ† 4/20/2022 2:37 AM
Yeah thats why I never stated admins doing it. Just like every other committee tms go to admins when they need help. Just like Spence said

first season has been interesting to say the least. Definitely had its fair share of memorable moments. I've enjoyed it for the most part. We've set a few things in motion recently (see the newsletter) that will hopefully help lead us in a better direction. There was a really good conversation today in GM hub about communication and the realization that what we initially think sounds good, might be missing key information for the average player. As for your second question I'm gonna keep it political. I've worked with all of them before and had no issues, however I would rather not give my personal opinion on the election to not indirectly sway anyone one way or another

tldr of the rules regarding tms thing: rules but not too hard bc then i have to think harder bc you make some wild connection that i have to address 😩 but honestly a lot of good discussion is had when gms interpret rules a certain way and it over time helps us make sure RC catches instances where there may be abilities to work around certain things. feedback cycle blah blah betterment yes sir

it depends on what the channel is for. if a CH requests one for their committee, well just add it for them if its needed

outside of that its kinda admin discretion but the need for new channels outside of committee stuff is rare

@willyflynn I wanted to give a true example of admins having to step in with TM, sometimes enforcing the rule that was forgotten isnt always what is best for the player. let me share an example, two? seasons ago punk was cut from a team when he was still supposed to be protected by the two match day rule. it was missed by the TMs. Now bringing Punk back to the team is what the rules say, however bringing a player back to a team where the GM has shown they are not wanted can create bad situations for teamplay and just the general environment. In a example like this the admins would step in and try to balance what is best for the league (should the rule be enforced) and what is best for the player(s) effected

It is the work, not decisions. We are not wanting to be introducing a new team midway through other processes. Some of these things will also be delegated out to the new admins/it will be important to get their input on. Spence in particular wanted us to get out the statement about public MMR, so that the discussion could be less about having to fight FOR it, but more around the implementation given that the numbers committee believes it can/should be done.

Just be aware while Numbers can set it up, due to the information and access that gives is still ultimately an Admin decision as well as something that will need to go through RC to ensure the Rulebook is changed to reflect it. Seems like a premature jump to once again "promise" something that is chanced to not happen again

I'm not sure if this question has been asked already. When/If Public MMR becomes a thing. What will you do as a admin if someone who believes that their mmr should be higher because they're "better" then this player? Obviously this is something the community wants but if it ends up blowing up in the admins faces what will be done to help elevate any issues. (Very much a what if but i'm sure this will be something happening) (edited)

After partially reviewing #notices from the past season, it seems to me that there was only one real admin notice towards the latter part of the season. There is a couple about servers, several others about the instances that occured though the season, such as GM removal/stepping down and the leak incident. Some were updates about the mod committee, however none provided real insight. As admins are overseers for the different committees, I believe it is important for the community to know about the need for new committee members before any issues may arise. Candidates, how will you go about providing the community with more transparency? How do you plan on providing the committees with their necessary resources should more situations arise?
Avatar
PFA | the|Supreme πŸ†πŸ† 4/20/2022 6:33 PM
id like to weigh in here a bit willy, adding members to committees is up to the committee heads, not the admins. this usually happens in the off season and there are application forms in #deleted-channel and as per needed, the CH will ask admins to make a notice for it
6:34 PM
if you check staff apps, you can see specifically tech committee asked for help with specific info, and it says other committees are looking for members too
Avatar
So in my opinion, Fuffy being the primary poster of notices tracks. It seems just like a natural thing from being head of media to being the defacto communication source from the admin team. Overall I don't really have a problem with it as sometimes its just easier to designate one person to write things up. I think that notices are a critical part of admin communication, however they are not the complete solution. Hell, the whole solution isn't going to be invented here on the spot. This is going to be an iterative process where we take small steps forward to increase transparency and communication with the community. I think the first step should be more town halls. At minimum at the beginning and end of each season but maybe even once a month. There is a definite difference in writing the community a dear john letter versus having to field questions in the flesh. I would expect every admin to participate in some town halls.

You would be correct that the amount of notices plus the information in the notices was not sufficient. I will say there is a plan in place to improve people-to-know that would provide more insight on each committee, franchise, etc. committee heads will provide info in their channel as needed. How I see the utilization of more frequent newsletters, is we can point people in the direction of those individual people-to-know channels when committees are looking for more people or have information that they would like to share. Ex: β€œ Media committee is looking for more observers, see (channel link) for more details Events is looking into Pokémon Showdown tournament, if you’re interested please see (channel link) Mod Committee would like to host their own town hall so the community can voice their opinions, please check (channel link) Stats is introducing a live scoreboard, check (channel link) to see what this means β€œ

Yup, I thought of that. If we disregard the updates about committee changes and regard the other incidents as "anomalies" that shouldn't happen next season, then what are we left with? Some server delays and #world-events?

Avatar
One thing the league cannot do is be static. We as a community will find what works for us and implement rules based on that. We certainly don't have to follow lock step with everyone else As the game changes (...slowly...thanks volvo) we as a league react to that, banning agent skins is a good example. So in terms of league changes, they need to be done on a case-by-case basis and like step bro said, its a collaborative process between the staff. Personally I don't really have an opinion about 6 man rosters because I haven't really thought about it all that much and the risks and benefits of implementing such a change. If it is where the large majority of the community wants to take the league I'm happy to be involved in that discussion.

Every change is different and as mentioned prior, it’s up to rules committee. However, to provide my own opinion on 6 man rosters… when I was a player I absolutely wanted that. However now that I’ve been here a little longer, I would not see it as beneficial at this time. The reason being is that the current setup allows β€œeveryone to play” with the utilization of the FA pool. 6 man rosters would affect that greatly. Some 6th men would be used a lot, others would never get to play. And the remaining FAs would never see anything. However, things change so who knows what the future holds?

@NAN | GREG0ROVITCH 🏆 here’s the other issue: where do you find people that you trust to be admins that aren’t players? GM and AGM you could make an argument for but requiring someone to not play is eh

We’re all here to play CS

I also have a strong feeling that if admins aren't players then they won't have as much drive for the league tbh

i used to play, then school took time that id practice, then admin took more time, and wouldn't be fair to a team for me to be 50% devoted to playing when others are 100% devoted. i stayed a fa but wasnt used bc i guess i stinky and also large FA pool. also doesnt help when freeman cuts you angryreact

Cutting raptor was the closest thing that could happen to ban raptor.

I feel I have already proved myself in this regard. As a player, I just enjoyed myself playing. Season 6, I took a step back as I had gotten married in December. Once I came back to being active midway through this past offseason, I pushed(and helped) the franchises to remake their branding on top of many other major design changes to the league. I then became a VERY involved GM and built successful teams with the help of wonderful people I was fortunate enough to bring in to the team. On top of this, I helped get season 7 the most games casted ever. I had never casted prior to this season, and while i don’t think I’m great, I put in the work by studying footage across many sports and esports broadcasts to try and give this league something they deserved. While there is concern about the drive of non-players, I believe I have absolutely proven that I am very driven to help this league, despite my inability to play anymore.

Oh I don't know if you took what I said as a negative for you, I don't view it as such. You can both be a non-player and have drive for being an admin. Its just less common and you can see that with a lot of people who are GMs. For example, I am probably a decent example, while always being a FA that was on the backburner and I was content with my playing to be at a minimum. You are likely the same. Just because you don't play doesn't mean you don't have time or dedication. Though in some cases it can be (if the reason you don't play is literally lack of time then yea obv). I am of the opinion that a GM admin can cause a lot of conflict of interests. Less so on the player front.

I figured it wasn’t necessarily negative or even directed towards me, but i saw it as a good point that you brought up and a good thing for me to address, as not everyone here has interacted with me as much as you have. But I will definitely address the question Greg had as well as jermz’s list when I get home. (edited)

Admins. This was discussed before in a serious suggestion. But is there a way to archive this and make it public?
