Why do you want to be an Arbiter? I'd like to get more involved in CSC at a deeper level. I've played for a couple seasons and I'd like to not only participate as a player but also to help the league on a deeper level. That's why I've become a bit more involved in media where possible and also one reason I want to apply for arbiter. I think arbiters have a crucial role in this league in making sure that rules are applied fairly and consistently. I feel that I would be good as an arbiter because my profession (teaching) is one where I have to evaluate whether students broke rules and react accordingly on a daily basis. Fairness is incredibly important to me. What experience do you have, if any, that would help you in the position of Arbiter? I've played in CSC for a few seasons, so I understand the way the league functions in a general sense. I've spoken with past arbiters and staff members and understand the roles and functions of the arbiter. I've read the arbiter handbook. I work as a teacher, a profession where judgement calls related to adherence to or breaking of rules are a daily occurence. If Player A is struck for being rude (Rule 10) to Player B, but claims that it was a joke, how would you rule this case and why? How I would handle this depends on who reported the incident. If Player B is the one who reported the comments then automatically "it's a joke" is not a valid defense and the ruling would be upheld. If it's player C, a third party who reported it, then I would ask Player B for their perspective on the issue and rule accordingly. However, if the abuse is clearly disruptive to the community at large, then the player may still be punished under rule 14, and obviously slurs and other rulebreaks would also still not be tolerated in any case. dacder, regarding your response to the last question. If player C said they were offended by the joke, would you uphold? In this situation, they basically overheard a rude joke.

I'd say that would largely be a judgement call and would depend largely on the specifics of the situation. Generally, though, I think a joke that could invoke rule 10 by a third party would most likely also be sufficient to invoke rule 14, which would therefore be more applicable.

Fun fact: Arbiters have 7 days to make a decision once the appealant has made their initial claims, however time sensitive punishments like mutes and MD bans can affect a players ability to play in matches and events. With that in mind, there can be some pressure to make decisions faster than others may feel comfortable doing so. How confident are you in your abilities to analyze and address provided evidence in a timely manner while still feeling that enough due diligence was done?

As a former arbiter, I understand that there are times where the mods and admins might disagree with how the arbiters are approaching a case. If elected, do you plan on finding ways to better meet in the middle with the other parties or do you want to stick to your own opinions on cases? Are you wanting to find ways bolster the arbiter's abilities and suggest changes to the committee and/or the mods' behavior guidelines since you rule based on those guidelines?

Very confident. I think as long as arbiters are relatively active on discord discussions the time limit shouldn't be any kind of problem, and I'm quite active on discord checking it several times a day. A week should provide enough time to gather and discuss all relevant info.

I think an ability to compromise is a great skill, however, I think a certain level of stubbornness is also healthy in the arbiter role. After all, Arbiter's are chiefly responsible for making sure rules are being applied fairly. If an arbiter is too stubborn that will detract from discussion quality, but if an arbiter is too much of a pushover then they might not challenge an unfair ruling firmly enough. It's a delicate balance, but I think an arbiter should never feel afraid to speak their mind. As for suggesting changes, I think I would have to be involved in the process for a while before I'm able to hold a strong opinion. I think it makes sense though that arbiter's have some ability to suggest changes just in case rules are written in a way that they are hard to understand or rule on.
