Why do you want to become an Admin? I've always been interested in CSC and hope to become an admin to help moderate and entertain the community. What prior experience do you have that you believe will help you as an Admin? I've moderated a few discord servers and had a few management positions with work and the National Guard, but nothing other than that. What things do you hope to implement, reinforce, or remove as an Admin? I hope to implement even more involvement of the community and reinforce the rules of CSC as a whole. I also hope to be able to remove people that purposefully tarnish the idea of the group (cheaters, scammers, etc. - being toxic is not technically a sign of reinforcement in my eyes). Anything else you would like to add? I'm almost sure I won't become an admin, but I know CSC will make the right choice in deciding who will become new admins. Thank you for your time on reading this. (edited)

Hey Scalpel, from the application description it seems that the job description aligns quite well more with mods than admins, what would you say would be your way of being able to achieve your goals as an admin provided that admins also have quite a lot of administrative tasks?

Hey scalpel, just a question for all of the candidates with some preface. While I firmly believe that IRL should take precedent over anything CSC, signing up for certain positions, such as admin, does come with some reasonable expectation that the person is available and free to put out fires, attend meetings, and perform many of the "labor" tasks during the offseason. That being said, what are your expectations of the level of time commitment that it takes to be an admin, and how confident are you in your free time to meet those commitments?

I honestly am not sure where the line is drawn between an admin and a mod and I apologize for that. However I wouldn't mind the opportunity to help with administrative tasks. I've felt that the admins of CSC aren't only admins, but also genuine members of the community. I feel that it would allow me to be much more involved with CSC and would allow me to put in the work equivalent to the joy CSC has given me.

I personally haven't seen anything I disagree with. As an admin their job is to make those calls that not everyone will agree with and I feel it's unfair to judge them unless their judgement/action is completely unfair. I would say the during this season there was a team that did not get to change their map selection because they had an error, however I think that was irrelevant since it was a tech committee issue. I do like the fact the admins are social for the most part, but in all honesty I haven't paid too much attention to what they do- and I obviously don't know what goes on behind the scenes. I understand it may be tough and I feel bad thinking about how I haven't noticed the admins as much before lately.

As a former mod, mods are more social police to make sure the server isn't just a bunch of people making inappropriate jokes and cursing each other out

And admins identify, plan, and have a hand in everything that needs to be done for the league to function (not all 3 applies to everything) (edited)

UPS | SCALPEL 🏆 8/9/2023 1:00 AM
It does mean running more events but it does not mean more 'strict' moderation (like banning someone because they said a curse word once, or a light violation). Moderation in my term involves just standard reinforcement if that makes sense, ensuring that people will follow the guidelines that CSC has posted- and to ensure that match rules are in line as well. Basically ensuring that players follow the rules, but have fun doing it.

I agree that IRL should take precedent over anything CSC, and that admin does come with expectations. I work at home and on my own schedule, so at the moment it isn't an issue for me. I don't plan on committing every hour of every day but I am always able to be around and perform tasks that're needed for CSC. I'm not sure what my expectations are, but I'm confident in my free time. To be fair about commitment and tasks- almost everyone has to suck at something to get good at something. I know I may fumble here and there if I'm permitted as an admin, but I hope to learn from the others, and figure out the most fair way to handle issues. In short- I feel like my free time is abundant in a way. There will obviously be moments I can't be here, but that won't be a lot.

UPS | SCALPEL 🏆 8/9/2023 1:08 AM
Honestly? I've had confidence issues for a while and I try not to hold myself back with it, but I've learned to understand pretending it doesn't exist is worse than coexisting with it. I also haven't had much involvement with CSC as I've been here a while, but Season 11 was the first season I got to see completely through without a cut or a family issue dragging me away. To be honest, I feel there are plenty other people who are well qualified compared to me and that is why I feel like I wouldn't get this position. Over time I'm sure I'd ease into it- getting used to how things work, how the gears turn etc. but I feel at the moment I'd kind of need a hand to hold to help figure things out first. In short I always feel nervous about applying for positions in general, but given that CSC has helped me find good friends and go through tough times- it makes the situation have much more gravity in my mind.

I mostly want to give back what CSC has given me- there was a lot of personal drama the last two seasons that didn't allow me to play and I had plenty of chances to make friends in the process, especially at a time where I had almost no friends. I hope to be a person that others can look up to when they're in a similar situation, but I also want to be able to give back to CSC since this league is the whole reason I was able to make those connections. In a sense, becoming an admin is both a personal goal and an opportunity for me to be able to put work into a group that has helped me. I'm sorry if my explanation is weird, currently tired and going to bed soon.

In the past members of the community including myself have asked for more transparency from the upper staff of CSC. Be it numbers, moderation or future admin plans. The argument is that additional information will improve trust in the system and help players to be more aware (such as numbers for players during the draft when they are already locked). Do you agree with the sentiment that all of this information should be public, or do you think only some or none of this information should be shared with the public?

I think that some of the information kept away from the public should be kept away. I feel like moderation should be kept from the public as that's in a sense, the secret sauce of the burger. I'm not sure of my opinion on numbers as I don't have much knowledge on it, but I feel like I'd lean more towards keeping it away from members as I'm sure there are ways that information could be abused or misused for an advantage that can be or will be unfair. I feel admin plans should be publicized (like plans for events or whats going on behind the scenes) as it would allow the community to be more involved and agree or disagree with the plan presented to said community. I'm not saying I'd willfully expose information that is meant to be private, but I would like to see more involvement and say in the community about certain things. I do think some things being publicized will bring more trust to the system CSC has set, but I also think that new information poses new possibilities and new ill-intended actions coming from players or other cadre. In simplicity, it all depends. In total honesty I'm unsure what could or what wouldn't disturb the system CSC has set- however overall I'd like to see more involvement.

The issue that I and others have had is that the most things are assumed to be private, instead of assumed public and made private if need be (such as sensitive information or numbers formulas). As for admin plans, there are systems that exist and have been used (though recently more neglected) such as #admin-updates. Do you have any specific plans to help share what your team is working on if you were an admin?

I feel that most things should be publicized unless noticeably used for ill intentions rather than making it private in the first place- however with the internet, anything that was private and becomes public can no longer be private, ever again. Publicizing sensitive information and numbers formulas could pose a problem as those are seemingly hard or impossible to change- and once they're publicized it will be almost impossible to make it private again. I feel like I'm a talkative person and would probably use the admin update channel often, but I'd also like to implement a system where people can openly discuss topics regarding updates and projects that are going on within the CSC admin team. If I could I'd love to make a channel for that, rather than a channel that posts regular updates about meetings and discussions talked about by the admins and committees. (edited)

I feel they would be good to have. However, I feel it would be better for those chats to moderated by the admins rather than bots, however human error and time constraints could lead to the same issue. I'm sure there's a way where it can be moderated without causing too much strain or dependence on either.

The argument around public information enabling bad actors is one that I try to push back on. For example, public numbers were argued against in the past as people could use them to harass people based on their MMR. However in practice those who are bad actors are going to do so no matter what, and moderation exists to punish anyone that does so. (this isn't a question so you don't need to like write a long response I just wanted to add one last bit of info, ty for the discussion) (edited)

That's a very valid point and I thought about that after my response, and it does change my opinion a little. Numbers may not be an overall bad thing to employ- however making it public makes me think that those bad actors now have more of an excuse to misuse that information. It all depends on the situation of course, but it does help thinking that.

Numbers have been public for the last few seasons, but after draft. Now the ask is for them to be public before the draft to help people do manual reports/help their GM draft. I think this is more a discussion that numbers may be having internally, and I believe they are tending towards opening things up earlier for manual reports and the like. Numbers is just the easy example though, my main point is the idea of taking each thing that is private and really asking if it needs to be. Have a good night man, and good luck in the election ❤️

Hello, I am asking this question to all candidates as I have noticed this being a consistent issue. I have been a participant in this and its sister league RSC for 10 seasons in total, and one of the things I have witnessed repeatedly is the burnout that admins experience. This has often led to, in my view, decisions made for expediency or to avoid a fight over enforcement of rules as written, instead hand waving away infractions and keeping them a secret/not allowing them to be discussed in server. I am not someone who thinks the rule book is perfect or that discretion shouldn't be used, but consistency is incredibly important to maintaining trust and legitimacy. This leads into my two questions: 1) If elected, how do you intend to mediate and hopefully avoid the potential for burnout? 2) Will you vote to enforce the rulebook as written or if you see an issue with a rule, will you be willing to actively work to have it corrected? (I know admins dont make the rules, but often find themselves involved in the adjudication process.)

COW | Saunce 8/9/2023 12:10 PM
Second question for the candidates: One of the responsibilities of the admin team is determining the schedules for the year and the season. With the massive expansion, many tiers saw conferences for the first time in the longest time, which was met with mixed reviews from the people I've talked to. What are your thoughts on the use of conferences and overall effectiveness of how the conferences functioned in S12? (Also if conferences are used in the future, will you try to make yeti rename them to hotdog and hamburger?)
Avatar
Adding on to Fuffy’s discussion. An alternate solution to public numbers that has been proposed is: Numbers soft locking earlier before draft, publishing those numbers to all, and allowing a short period for manual adjustments/numbers reports before the draft. This solves the issues of people being able to easily abuse numbers to fit a team, and allows time to solve misplaced players. How would you feel about a less drastic change as outlined above?

The rule book will never be perfect considering how many people follow it- its all about the medium where everyone can see the rules as fair. I agree with consistency being heavily factored into maintaining legitimacy and trust. Other then CSC, there are a lot of other things I do to avoid burnout- like other games or model kits. I'm sure I'll hit burnout eventually, but those options let me string it out as far as possible. I'd like to think there are a few rules that should be corrected, however as mentioned the admins don't make the rules and just about anything within the rule book can be seen correct by one person, and incorrect by the next. As mentioned I feel it in involves just finding a happy medium between the two.

I personally liked the idea of how conferences were used in recruit- the fact that we played inside and outside of our conference was a good way to gauge our own improvements, and brought a spin to how things would go usually (of course I'm not exactly sure how things were before conferences). I think they were effective personally, but I can't say for the rest of the league- not even the rest of my team. That'd tie into the publicizing of admin discussion- that's something I feel would better be voted by the players rather than discussed by a few people. They'll always be hamburger and hotdog in my mind, even if yeti decides not to change them

I agree with the change mentioned. It allows players to be placed where they should be as mentioned, and it allows a period for numbers to be readjusted. I feel like this would be a better approach rather than making numbers completely public as mentioned above, and would allow the fix for situations where a player has low MMR but has a very high skill ceiling. (For example, a player that's faceit lvl7 having almost no recognized stats in CSC other than three combine games where said player underperformed). Overall I feel it would be better to go with a softer change like the one mentioned, and I feel like it would actually benefit CSC and it's players by implementing more fairness and inclusiveness within the community.

I hope to be able to interact with the community and help host / solely host events that the community would be interested in. I want to be able to give time into CSC itself, and give an impact on certain aspects of the admin community that I feel can/ should be adjusted (e.g. the admin updates channel and it's inactivity). For the most part what I want to do is help with what needs to be done and act as a mediary mod, but I also want to be a voice of the community for what they like and what they dislike.

Hello Mr Scalpel, I originally asked this to Tuwtles based on one of his responses but I thought it'd be a good question for everyone. As I believe it currently stands, the head mod picks people they think would make a good moderator with the approval of the other mods (who were also previously picked by the same head mod). If the current head mod were to step down, their replacement would be elected by the body of existing mods (who technically submit approval to admins but admins have previously self-admitted that they usually prefer to defer to the judgement of the moderation team). If this is incorrect, happy to have someone correct me. Do you believe the current way the moderation team is constructed creates or could create unnecessary friction with the community and breed a lack of trust?

I believe each branch should have their own system of promotion, however with some supervision. I've always kept the mindset that things unchecked can always lead to issues, however I don't personally believe that interference is ever necessary unless there's substantial evidence that it's needed. The way the moderation team works doesn't hold any friction in my eyes, but can easily change depending on the actions done within the moderation team. I haven't really seen any distrust between the community with the mods, but that could be because I have turned a slight blind eye towards it. I'm sure my opinion may change if I'm elected as an admin, so my answer at the moment is not concrete. (edited)

More so direct question, but most times i've seen you typing it has been what i would refer to as shit posting. Do you think you'll be able to change that and convey serious conversations if you become admin?

I like to think my shit-posting is part of my personality. However, being able to switch to a more punctual setting is easy to me, as I mostly do the shit-posting to appease to others and just have fun within the server. In short I would like to keep the style that I talk (hamburger hotdog etc.) however that doesn't mean I can't drop it when needed and turn that switch on inside my head. On the same note, I feel it the opposite way as well- I can keep a serious tone, however if I don't need to be at the moment I'd like to be able to talk how I usually do with the community. I don't plan on shitposting when it comes to meetings or discussions that do not permit it, but if I can be dumb in the general chat with friends I'm going to. Part of building relationships and trust is exactly that- being friendly and making people laugh, or see you as someone they can act dumb with. I feel personally that I can keep serious uptones and convey myself with an honest tone, but I don't feel like that should omit my ability to convey random moods or express less-than-modest statements as long as they do not break the rules set by CSC.

To add onto the above statement, I understand that my opinions may bring a sour image when it comes to putting me into a position such as an admin. However- expressed by multiple questions above and the community itself- it's evident there is a blanket of mistrust between the admins and the community, allbeit how large or small it is- it's still there. My counter-question on it is would I need to permanently change it and risk the loss of those connections and friendships, or do I only need to lose it when it is necessary to the role? (edited)

Hey Scalpel! Most assume admins have the ability to implement or make sudden changes that would change how things have been running within CSC (ie. transparency, more elections, public availablity etc) and perhaps don't know or realize that it requires a lot of talking and agreement between various parties to make any major change. That being said, assuming you were to win the admin election, how would you react or try to bring a conversation about something you wanted to change yet have no or little support from other committee heads or admins?

I think the best way I could bring up a conversation to the committee heads and other admins would be is to just start talking to them about it. Mention things like "hey, I think we should start talking about this and see what the community thinks about this idea", and maybe even share my idea with the community if the other admins and committee heads don't give the idea the light of day- to see what their opinion about a change I have in mind would be. Of course I wouldn't promise that the change would happen, but if the community agrees with the idea I'd surely let them know that I'd push for it to happen. I think the best way to start a change is for people to start talking about it. Possibility is a beast because all it truly requires is public opinion, in most cases.
